The Golden Circle of Iceland encompasses three of the classic highlights of the country—Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area, and Gulfoss Waterfall—and stretches of stunning countryside in between.

Beginning in the capital city of Reykjavik, the Golden Circle covers about 230 kilometres and is one of the best road trips in a country known for its fantastic overland journeys. The UNESCO-listed site of Thingvellir is the first stop on the route and the most popular attractions—it’s where the North American and Eurasian plates meet, creating the Silfra Fissure where you can snorkel and dive. Visitors can also explore the Game of Thrones scenery at Almannagjá gorge, see the magnificent Öxarárfoss waterfall, and hike on the Langjökull glacier.

A little distance away, the Geysir geothermal area offers a dramatic landscape replete with bubbling geysers and steaming vents. The Strokkur Geyser erupts every few minutes, shooting water upto 40 metres in the air, and there are several other hot springs and bubbling mud pools to be explored in the surrounding valley.

The third most famous attraction of the Golden Circle, Gulfoss, thunders down 32 metres over two steps, creating an incredible amount of spray in the summer months. Also visit Langjökull, the second largest ice cap in the country, where you can enjoy a glacier trek.
