Best Time To Visit Sri Lanka

There is no question too small. Start planning your dream trip by talking to our Destination Specialists

Best Time To Visit Sri Lanka – By Region

The best time to visit Sri Lanka is determined by its two monsoon systems—the southwest or Yala monsoon, from April to September and the northeast or Maha monsoon, from November to March. In October and November, unpredictable thunderstorms and heavy rains lash the island.

South and west coasts: Popular tourist towns such as Colombo, Galle, Mirissa, Weligama, and Hikkaduwa are located on the south and west coasts. April to June is the wettest time on this more developed side of the island. So if you are looking for a beach holiday on these coasts, the best time to visit Sri Lanka is from October to March.

East and north coasts: The less popular north and east coasts of Sri Lanka retain a raw and rustic charm and are perfect for travellers who want to go off the beaten track. To avoid the monsoon, visit Sri Lanka’s lesser-known coasts between April and September.

Cultural triangle: End-December to April is the best time to visit Sri Lanka’s ancient kingdoms and heritage sites of the north-central plains. The region is dry, and temperatures are pleasant during these months.

Hill country/Central hills: Further inland, Sri Lanka’s hill country is always cool and pleasant, with average temperatures around 15°C. The best time to visit the tea gardens of Ella and Nuwara Eliya is January to April when the days are dry and the humidity low.

Best Time To Visit Sri Lanka – By Activity

Beaches: December to March is the best time to visit the beaches on the south and west coasts, while the beach towns on the north and east coast are best from May to September.

Wildlife: For safari lovers, the best time to visit Sri Lanka is between July and September. During this dry season, Minneriya National Park witnesses a fantastic natural phenomenon called ‘the gathering’ during which up to 300 elephants congregate at the park’s water source. The best time to spot leopards is between December and March at Yala National Park.

Hiking in Sigiriya: The best time to hike to Sigiriya Rock is from January to March. Start walking early as it can get quite hot and humid during the day. It’s cooler here in September and October, though there is a chance of rain.

Surfing: Hikkaduwa, on the southwest coastline, sees the biggest swells from November to April, while Arugam Bay on the east coast is surfer central from May to October.

What To Pack For Sri Lanka

The dress code in Sri Lanka is conservative, especially when entering temples and other places of worship. Visitors to the country’s temples are expected to cover their knees and shoulders.

Cool clothing: Cottons, linens, and bamboo fabrics to combat the humidity. Women should pack skirts, long dresses, comfortable trousers, and sleeved tops or shirts. Men should carry at least a couple of pairs of long trousers and sleeved shirts.

Outerwear: A light jacket, jumper, or cardigan will be needed if you travel to Sri Lanka’s hill country, as this region is much cooler than the coasts. A rain jacket is also essential.

Swimwear: Pack swimsuits if you plan to visit beach towns but throw in a couple of sarongs or coverups for when you are outside the water.

Footwear: Pack hiking boots and comfortable walking shoes if you plan to hike to Sigiriya or tour the Cultural Triangle.

Sun protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, a sun hat, and mosquito repellant are necessary for all regions.

“Make time in Colombo to experience the authentic street food on offer. Try the ‘Sri Lankan Hopper’ – a rice and coconut crepe with an egg in the middle and complemented with spicy caramelized onions.”
