Best Time To Visit The USA

There is no question too small. Start planning your dream trip by talking to our Destination Specialists

Best time to visit the USA – By season

Summer: If you are keen on visiting the country’s northern states, summer (June to August) is the best time to visit the USA. It’s warm and pleasant, which means you can also enjoy land and water activities the coastal states are known for. The south and southwestern states can be hot and humid during this period, but this doesn’t deter the crowds.

Autumn: The fall season and the colours that go with it run from September to November. It is one of the best times to visit America’s northeastern states: Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, New York, and Massachusetts. Trees in northern states like Michigan, Colorado, and Montana also burst into shades of red, orange, brown, yellow and golden. States on the country’s southeastern coast will see the most hurricanes during this season.

Winter: Many ski resorts spring into action by November and stay active till March. California, Colorado, and Utah see plenty of snow action during this season. In the northern states, the days are short, and temperatures drop into the single digits and even below freezing. With temperatures in the 20s C, Southern California and Florida are perfect destinations to escape the cold winter.

Spring: Spring break crowds descend on Florida in March. If the nation’s capital is on your must-visit list, spring is the best time to visit. Washington DC puts on a stunning spring blossom display in April. However, the weather in March and April can be unpredictable, with some cold and wet days, especially in the northern states. May is a wonderful month to visit the USA with warmer temperatures and quieter cities.

Best time to visit the USA – By region

Northeast: If visiting New England is on your wishlist, then the summer and fall seasons are the best times to visit. From June to August, the northeastern states see daytime temperatures in the 30s C, allowing for beach fun, hiking, and boating. With its brilliant palette of fall foliage, the autumn season is a magical time to visit.

Southeast: Generally, the best time to visit the southeastern US is from March to November. Florida is excellent year-round though summers can get hot and humid, and the probability of hurricanes increases between August and October.

West: Weather conditions can be dramatically different in the northern and southern states of the West Coast. The best time to visit Washington state and Oregon is summer (June to August) when the region sees the least rain. You can witness fall colours from late September to early October, but temperatures are cooler, and there is a higher chance of precipitation.

California gets the most visitors during the summer months (June-Aug) though weather conditions, especially in the southern part of the state, are rather pleasant year-round. Temperatures in Los Angeles hover around 20s C, even during peak winter. If you are looking for a quieter time to visit the state, consider visiting during the spring or fall. Further inland, the mountain states are lovely in spring, summer and fall, and snowy but stunning in winter.

Southwest: Summers can be brutal in the southwestern states, so for pleasant weather conditions, visit the region in winter or spring. Temperatures are mild, letting you explore national parks and lively cities.

Midwest: The best time to visit the midwest cities is from late spring through early fall, i.e., mid to end April to early September.

What to pack for your USA holiday?

Your packing list for the USA depends on the region and season in which you are visiting.

Summerwear: Summers in most parts of the US are warm, so light, breathable clothes are recommended. Temperatures can hit the 30s C in the south and southwestern states, so pack sunglasses, hats, and sunscreen.

Spring/Autumn wear: If you are visiting during the spring or autumn months, you will need a warm jacket for those unpredictable and sudden drops in temperature. Also, carry an umbrella or rain jacket for rainy days. Carry layers to manage the differences in daytime and nighttime temperatures.

Winter wear: Winter in the midwest and northern states and midwest are very cold with a high chance of snow. Bring layers of your warmest winter gear, including jackets, thermals, gloves, fleeces, woollen caps, and socks. Shoes that keep your feet snug are essential.

“If you plan on visiting three or more national parks on your USA holiday, it’s well worth purchasing the ‘America the Beautiful’ pass, which saves you on entry fees. This pass is available on all national park gates.”

“When it comes to dining out, don’t always go with what’s familiar. Venture further and ask your hotel’s concierge whether there is a restaurant or local area they recommend that’s off-the-beaten track. Some of the USA’s best restaurants are tucked away.”
