Overview of New Zealand
From its welcoming cities to its impossibly photogenic landscapes, there’s so much to see and do here
New Zealand experiences four distinct seasons, but as it is part of the Southern Hemisphere, these are the opposite of those felt in the Northern Hemisphere at the same time. So, when the Northern Hemisphere is in the peak of winter, it’s warm, bright and sunny in New Zealand.
Summer – This season that runs from December to March, is characterised by temperatures in the low to mid-20s, and is the best time to visit New Zealand. The days are long, allowing you plenty of time to explore cities and enjoy outdoor activities. The only downside to travelling during this time is that it is a very popular period, and you must plan months in advance to get your pick of accommodations.
Fall – Autumn in New Zealand extends from March to May. There is plenty of sunshine, and the landscape turns into shades of red, brown and orange, making it the best time of the year to visit New Zealand for lovely sceneries. Temperatures hover in the mid-teens to low 20s, so bring clothes you can layer if you visit during this time.
Winter – New Zealand has a short and mild winter season from June to August. Temperatures range from 7°C to 15°C, and weather conditions are a mix of clear, blue skies and cloudy days. Ski season starts from the latter half of June, depending on snow levels, and ends only in early October.
Spring – This season, which lasts from September to November, is a time of contrasts in New Zealand, with the mountains still donning a snow cover while new leaves and flowers start blooming at lower altitudes. Temperatures inch up into the mid to high teens, and the sun starts making a more regular appearance. It’s an excellent season to visit New Zealand for its delightful city tours and countryside drives.
Hiking – With thousands of kilometres of trails to explore, hiking is one of the best ways to experience New Zealand. The hiking season starts in spring, usually by October and ends in April. With long daytime hours, summer is the most popular time to go hiking in New Zealand. The autumn months of March, April and May are some of the best times to witness fall colours in the country’s magnificent national parks.
Skiing – The best time to visit New Zealand for skiing is August and September. The ski season runs from the end of June to October.
Whale watching – Some species of whales and dolphins can be seen year-round near Kaikoura and Auckland. The best time to spot orcas is during the summer months, from December to March, and for humpback whales it is June and July.
Southern Lights – Not as well known as the Northern Lights, the Southern Lights or the Aurora Australis are equally magical and mesmerising and can be best seen during the winter months from June to August in New Zealand.
Your packing list for New Zealand depends on the time of year you are visiting and the activities you plan to sign up for.
One of the must-haves for your New Zealand holiday is wet weather gear. There is no specific rainy season in the country, and you could get caught in a wet patch at any time during your trip.
Even though temperatures are pretty moderate during the summer, the sun can really bear down, so be sure to carry sunscreen, a sun hat and sunglasses. Layers are vital while travelling in the country, as weather conditions can change quite unexpectedly. Pack a warm jacket, sweater or fleece no matter the season you visit New Zealand.
Casual clothes and comfortable footwear work at most places, though you could pack a more formal set for a night out in the city.
For hikes through the national parks, carry at least one pair of hiking trousers, short and long-sleeved T-shirts and sturdy walking or hiking shoes.
