Overview of Sri Lanka
If you’re keen on balmy weather, pristine beaches, and distinctive, delicious food, a Sri Lanka holiday is just what you need
Surf, sand, and sun
Sri Lanka is known for soft sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. Spend quiet days on a sunbed, swim in warm ocean waters, and sip cocktails at sunset on your favourite beach.
Surfers from all over are drawn to the world-class selection of point breaks at the palm-fringed Arugam Bay. And yet, it retains the charm of an unspoilt beach town. While surfing is a popular activity, you can kick back and watch the action or try some of the other water sports on offer.
Sunrise hike to Sigiriya
Rising dramatically from within a dense jungle, the ancient palace and rock fortress of Sigiriya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has been compared by some to Machu Picchu.
It is one of the best places to visit in Sri Lanka for a scenic hike. Set off at sunrise, and you will be rewarded with sublime views. Don’t miss the Buddhist architecture, ancient frescoes, and the ruins of an old kingdom. Climb Pidurangala Rock, a few kilometres north of Sigiriya, for an unforgettable view.
Yala National Park
A safari in Yala National Park is one of the best things to do in Sri Lanka.
The park is home to leopards, elephants, monkeys, sloth bears, and over 200 species of birds. Though there are around 50 resident leopards, spotting these elusive animals is a game of luck. Keep your camera handy.
Galle
The architecture in Galle is an eclectic mix of Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences, and it’s easy to fall in love with this town.
Go on a guided walk of Galle Fort, pedal through idyllic villages, soak in the sun at Galle’s beaches and go on a whale- and dolphin-spotting excursion from Mirissa.
Cultural Triangle
The impressive ruins of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa are part of the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka. These cities were once capitals of the ancient Sinhalese kingdom. They are UNESCO World Heritage Sites that give you an insight into the history and culture of the country.
Go back in time as you explore the remains of the Sacred Quadrangle area, the impressive Audience Hall, and the King’s swimming pool. Don’t miss the impeccably preserved Buddha figures at Gal Vihara. The Cultural Triangle refers to a region in northern Sri Lanka. A tour here is one of the top things to do in Sri Lanka and often includes visiting Kandy, the cave temple of Dambulla, the stupas of Mihintale, and the Buddhist monastery at Ritigala.
Nuwara Eliya
Nuwara Eliya is a charming town in the heart of Sri Lanka’s hill country. While the rolling landscape portrays a laid-back vibe, there is still plenty to do.
Visit one of the many picturesque tea plantations and learn about the process of teamaking. Boxes of fine Ceylon tea from the source make for wonderful souvenirs. Go on hikes around the region, trek to a nearby waterfall, or head out for a boat ride on Lake Gregory.
Kandy
In Kandy, visit the Sri Dalada Maligawa Temple, which has the famed tooth relic of Lord Buddha. Visitors from all over the country and world come here to seek Buddha’s blessings.
If you want a break from the crowds, head to the Royal Botanical Gardens. It’s the perfect place to inhale the fresh mountain air and explore the vast collection of rare, exotic, medicinal plants, and prized orchid collections.
