Overview of Tanzania
Tanzania is the main venue for “the greatest show on Earth” – the Great Migration, spectacular wildlife viewing experience
Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, is one of the best places to visit in Tanzania. It sprawls across 260 sq. km., is 610 m deep and is believed to have been created two million years ago.
Africa’s Garden of Eden, as it is known, is home to thousands of animals, including lions, elephants, black rhinos, hippos, zebras, and more. Sign up for walking safaris with Maasai guides and embark on photography and birdwatching tours.
Lake Manyara National Park
Lake Manyara National Park in the Great Rift Valley is a three-hour drive from the Ngorongoro crater and a good day trip. It is known for its tree-climbing lions, herds of elephants, and 400+ bird species.
Lake Manyara is a shallow alkaline lake that provides the perfect feeding ground to vast flocks of pink flamingos and pelicans. Canoe and boat rides on the lake are among the best things to do in Tanzania, a fabulous way to spot the park’s varied wildlife.
Tarangire National Park
Dotted with fascinating baobab trees, Tarangire Park is home to four of the Big Five (you won’t see rhinos here) and over 500 species of birds, making it one of the top things to do in Tanzania for birding enthusiasts.
During the dry season, herds of elephants, buffalos, lions, and leopards are drawn to the Tarangire River, the only water source, and this throws up unforgettable wildlife viewing experiences.
Gombe Stream National Park
Made famous by Jane Goodall, who studied chimpanzees here for over three decades, Gombe Stream National Park is one of the few places where you can see this intelligent primate in the wild.
At 35 sq. km., Gombe is Tanzania’s smallest national park, but it more than makes up for its size with its fabulous guided chimpanzee viewing treks that take you up close to these incredible creatures.
The largest protected game reserve in Africa, Selous, is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The highlight of the region is the Rufiji River, whose fascinating network of lakes and water channels is perfect for river safaris.
During the dry season, it’s not unusual to spot elephants frolicking and hippos lazing in the water.
Olduvai Gorge, Cradle of Humankind
Home to some of the oldest fossil remains of the first humans, dating back two million years, the Olduvai Gorge in northern Tanzania is often called the Cradle of Humankind.
The area has evidence of the longest continuous record of human evolution. Go back to your roots, and take a tour of excavation sites and the museum, which shed light on the important discoveries made here.
Beaches and snorkelling
Zanzibar, Mafia Island, and Pemba Island, located just off the coast, provide the perfect setting to relax and soak in the beauty of the Indian Ocean.
Boasting sparkling blue-green waters and heavenly soft white sand beaches, the islands are known for their spectacular coral reefs and underwater life. Naturally, the beach is one of Tanzania’s top tourist attractions and the perfect finale for your holiday.
Stone Town, Zanzibar
A walk through Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Swahili Coast trading town, is truly a journey back in time. Explore its narrow alleys and centuries-old buildings. Zanzibar is a melting pot of African, Arab, Indian, Persian, and European cultures, and Stone Town is known for its irresistible street food.
