Frequently Asked Questions
What currency should I bring to Tanzania?
The official currency of Tanzania is the Tanzanian shilling, though it is worth noting that larger shops and chains may accept payment in US dollars, as some citizens prefer it to the shilling. When visiting Arusha and Dar es Salaam, most hotels, lodges, bars and restaurants will accept card payment, and there will be ATMs available around the cities. As you would expect, the further you travel from these cities, the harder it will be to locate an ATM, and you should expect to pay for any services in shillings – especially if you are doing business with local tribes.
What is Tanzania known for?
The best place to view the extraordinary annual migration, Tanzania is home to some of the largest and most diverse game reserves across all of Africa. It’s variety of dramatic landscapes includes the towering Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa; the vast savannahs and the winding waterways of the Serengeti and the Grumati River; and the Godupai Gorge, where early humans are first thought to have roamed almost two million years ago.
What language do the people of Tanzania speak?
The official language of Tanzania is Swahili, but there is a large population of English-speaking citizens that combine both languages. You will find that your safari guides and most service workers within the tourist industry will speak English reasonably well, but should not expect it of local tribes and citizens as you venture further from Arusha and Dar es Salaam.
Imposing mountain ranges, blissful beaches, Commiphora woodlands and vast volcanic craters – Tanzania’s myriad landscapes provide the perfect backdrop for one of the best safari experiences in all of Africa. Here, the Big Five roam, as wildebeest, zebra and antelope wander the horizons with hungry predators in tow. Discover fascinating local tribes, witness Tanzania’s wildlife up close, and sip sundowners from the deck of your luxury lodge, gazing over the peaceful plains as dusk settles.
