Overview of Peru
There’s no escaping the mystery and mystique surrounding Peru’s most famous attraction – the ruins of Machu Picchu while on holiday in Peru.
Situated in the northwest of Peru close to the Pacific Coast, the charming city of Trujillo is known as much for its scenic beaches as it is for its archaeological sites and architecture. Stroll by Trujillo’s churches and watch the sky change colour from its central square.
Travel to the abandoned adobe city of Chan Chan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and learn the significance of the Sun and Moon Huacas. Huanchaco Beach provides the perfect setting for a break, to soak up some sun and catch some waves.
Surrounded by volcanoes, Arequipa stuns with its white facade buildings and beautiful vistas. Begin at the gorgeous central plaza, taking in the beauty of its historic buildings while resting under towering palm trees.
Tour the colourful Monasterio de Santa Catalina, visit the city’s many picturesque churches and go on a day trip to Colca Canyon, and spot majestic condors gliding across the skies. Catch unforgettable views of Misti volcano, visible from many parts of the city and for an adventure, sign up for a climbing expedition to its top.
The starting point for excursions to Machu Picchu, Cuzco, is the cultural capital of the country and one of the best places to visit in Peru. The Plaza de Armas sits at the heart of the city. Visit La Catedral, enjoy a relaxing lunch with stunning views or simply people-watch while sipping on coffee at one of its many lovely cafes.
In the evening, head to the charming San Blas District and wander around its chic boutiques and trendy restaurants. For an exciting day trip, head to nearby villages known for their traditional and colourful Peruvian weaves. Cuzco puts on a colourful show during the Inti Raymi festival, one of the best times to visit Peru.
Cuzco serves as a convenient base to explore the many villages and ruins of Sacred Valley. Marvel at the salt ponds of Maras and pick up a bottle of the pink-hued salt; it makes for a unique souvenir.
History buffs will love driving out to the archaeological sites of Ollantaytambo. Equally fascinating are the Pisac ruins and the terraces in Moray. There is also white water rafting, ziplining and paragliding for adrenaline seekers to try out.
Mystery surrounds the origins and meaning of the Nazca Lines, a series of geoglyphs drawn out into the desert sands of Nazca. Hundreds of drawings of birds, animals and abstract figures are spread over 80 km, and the best way to see these figures is on a short charter flight over the Nazca Lines.
There is also a 42 feet tall observation tower from where you can view some of the Nazca Lines. Those who are not in a hurry to get to their next destination can check out the Cantalloc Aqueducts, the burial grounds and mummies of the Chauchilla Cemetery.
A short boat ride from Paracas on the western coast of Peru takes you to a group of islands that is known for its incredible marine biodiversity. Spot Humboldt penguins, sea lions, and seals sunbathing on rocky outcrops or diving in to catch their day’s meal.
The islands also provide the perfect conditions for an incredible number of bird species to nest, including Peruvian boobies, pelicans, and Inca terns. Little wonder then that the islands are viewed as a fabulous alternative to the Galapagos Islands. Back on land, explore the contrasting landscapes of the Paracas National Reserve and seek out the sparkling oasis of the Huacachina desert.
Manu National Park, another of Peru’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, is a fantastic introduction to the diversity of the Peruvian Amazon. Home to 4,000 animal species, including 1,000 bird species, spending a few days basking in nature is one of the best things to do in Peru.
Set off on forest treks and spot a dizzying number of animals, birds and butterflies, cruise down the river listening to the sounds of the jungle and get a different perspective on canopy walks. Many lodges and activities are run by local communities who have lived here for generations, and a stay here is a great way to understand their lifestyle and challenges.
