Expert Tips

a woman smiling for the camera

“I loved visiting the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi – seeing the baby elephants playing with their handlers was fantastic. Also pay a visit to the Karen Blixen Museum, former African home of Danish author Karen Blixen, famous for her book ‘Out of Africa’ which chronicles life at the estate.

“Don’t forget that the distances between national parks are vast – speak to a Destination Specialist to make sure you maximise your game viewing opportunities. Travel by rail from Nairobi to Mombasa on the Madaraka Express – view the beautiful landscapes and National Parks (such as Tsavo) from the comfort of a modern train.

“If you want to contribute to Kenya’s less fortunate, take school stationery to the local orphanages – there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a child’s face light up over a new pen.”

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is there a departure tax?

Yes. The departure tax is around $40 (£30) when you leave Kenya. For internal flights, you will need to pay $2.50 (£2) per person per flight. In most cases, this will be included in your airfare, but check before you travel.

2. What is the time difference between the UK and Kenya?

Kenya is three hours ahead of the UK.

3. What is the best mode of transportation in Kenya?

The best mode of transportation in Kenya is by flight. Choosing a rental car with a driver is also a good option, especially when the destination is not close to an airport.

In larger cities like Nairobi, the best option is to take an Uber or choose a car rental with a chauffeur.

4.  What is the food like in Kenya?

Kenyan food features rice and grains such as maize, sorghum and millet paired with vegetables and meats. Ugali, cornmeal cooked until it achieves a dough-like consistency, is Kenya’s staple food. Stews made with potatoes and meat are also popular. The food in Kenya’s coastal towns features plenty of seafood specialities.

Cities like Nairobi have restaurants that serve international cuisine such as Italian, American, Mexican, Chinese and more. Most upscale safari and beach resorts also offer their guests a variety of cuisines from around the world.

5. Which beach towns and islands are best for families and couples in Kenya?

Kenya is blessed with a beautiful coastline, providing the perfect setting for a dreamy beach holiday. About 30 kilometres from the beach town of Mombasa is Diani Beach, considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Watamu is home to palm-fringed strips of sand and fantastic snorkelling, while Lamu Island allows you to experience Swahili culture on your coastal getaway.

Adding a beach town to your Kenya holiday packages is the best way to relax, after an exciting safari adventure.

6. What are some distinct animal interactions that visitors can have in Kenya?

Holidays to Kenya are filled with unforgettable wildlife interactions and adventures. Here are some of our favourites –

  • Get a sloppy kiss from a giraffe at the Giraffe Manor
  • Adopt an elephant at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
  • Learn about rhino conservation at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy
  • Spot birds and animals on a safari walk in Nairobi National Park
  • Meet and greet meerkats in the Kalahari
