Ramadan
Ramadan lasts for one month and is a time of reflection and prayer for Muslims. It is marked by a fast from sun rise to sun down each day to cleanse the body of impurities and remind Muslims how those less fortunate may feel. The holiday begins on the sunset the previous day and although Ramadan is always on the same day of the Islamic calendar, the date on the Gregorian calendar changes year to year. This is because the Gregorian calendar is a solar calendar and the Islamic calendar is lunar. The date of Ramadan also varies by country depending on whether the moon has been sighted or not. We still recommend travelling to Dubai during Ramadan. it’s a special time and if you respect the local customs you can also enjoy one of the fabulous breaking of the fast buffets, called Iftar that are held early evening.
It is important to remember that eating, drinking and smoking are strictly forbidden in all public places from sunrise to sunset except in designated areas, which will include inside your hotel, around the pool and at private beaches. You cannot purchase alcohol anywhere during daylight hours, however alcohol will be served in hotel bars after sunset. Live music is banned and stores may change their opening times, staying open later in the evening during Ramadan. Ramadan in 2015 will start on Thursday, the 18th of June and will continue for 30 days until Friday, the 17th of July.
