Some of my unforgettable trips include solo backpacking in Costa Rica, Malaysia and Thailand and an expedition cruise to the northernmost part of the world. Throughout my travels, I have learnt that authentic experiences are at the heart of every journey – my interactions with local people, immersive street market tours, and visiting spectacular landscapes, have contributed to my greatest memories from each trip. Favourite local food from a destination
‘Gaeng boo’, a southern style Phuket curry is my ultimate dish. It is a bright yellow curry with rich crab flakes, fresh chilli and creamy coconut milk. Having crab curry on the open beach cafes of Phuket was a dream.
Favourite wildlife encounter
We explored the huge tracts of Damaraland’s ephemeral river beds in search of something special- the infamous desert elephant found in only two African countries, Nambia and Mali. Being near a secluded granite gorge and seeing wild elephants was extremely moving.
Favourite cultural experience
I loved exploring the 10th century capital of Sri Lanka; Polonnaruwa, the ancient capital of the Sinhalese. Exploring the temples, palaces, huge dagobas (Buddhist stupas) on foot was a great and very unique experience.
I'll always remember when…
We drove to Sossusveli in Namibia, a famous desert with a large salt and clay pan. Leaving at 4:30am in the morning, we climbed high red dunes in silence with no sound except for the whisper of the winds in the desert. Climbing the dunes at sunrise was one of the best travel experiences I’ve ever had. The sunrise revealed vast, dry, uninhabited expanses amongst the backdrop of a never-ending deep blue sky.
