Dreaming of palm-fringed beaches and endless sunshine? An island getaway is just what you need. Soak up glorious sunsets on the Indian Ocean, swim with whale sharks in a laid back island off the coast of Mexico or unearth the rich biodiversity of Galapagos Islands. We’ve rounded up some of the most stunning islands that spell tropical bliss, for your next beach holiday. Which of these are on your travel bucket list?
Mauritius

With 320 kilometres of coastline and perfect tropical weather, Mauritius is set to present you with the most memorable of island experiences. Snorkel in the clear blue waters and unearth a whole new world of marine life. Besides snorkelling, sunbathing and swimming, this island nation offers plenty of opportunities for hiking and exploration at sprawling plantations, botanical gardens and the Black River Gorges National Park. To immerse yourself in the real Mauritius, however, head to the little settlements and quaint fishing villages outside the main tourist areas, where diverse cultures and flavourful cuisine await you.
Must-tries: A helicopter ride above Le Morne peninsula for a bird’s-eye view of the “underwater waterfall.” Or snorkel amid rich marine life at Coin de Mire.
Maldives

Few island destinations in the world spell barefoot luxury like the Maldives, an archipelago of over 1,000 islands scattered across the Indian Ocean. The country’s many private island resorts promise luxurious accommodations ranging from beach bungalows to secluded overwater villas, some with plunge pools and butler service. Adults-only resorts have unmatched privacy and offer romantic moments like sandbank dinners, sundowner cruises, and secluded “starbeds” to sleep under a twinkling night sky. Families too are spoilt for choice with a plethora of dining options, onshore activities, and watersports.
Must-tries: A discovery dive for beginners or a diving excursion to see whale shark migrations, stingrays, and sea turtles for the experienced. Or a customised couple’s dinner at a sandbar or in an overwater villa.
Seychelles

Just four degrees south of the equator, Seychelles is a year-round destination famed for its forests, reefs, and giant tortoises. Long stretches of unspoilt sands line the 115-odd islands, giving way to vibrant coral reefs that make this among the world’s finest snorkelling and diving destinations. Diverse animal and bird species inhabit its lush nature reserves, including two UNESCO World Heritage sites, the Vallee de Mai on Praslin island, and remote Aldabra, home to over 150,000 giant tortoises.
Must-tries: Relax at Anse Lazio beach in northwest Praslin. Stay in a small private island resort such as Denis Island.
Gili Islands, Indonesia

Silken sands, aqua-hued waters, and diverse marine life in a riot of colors make the dreamy Gili Islands, near Bali, a slice of heaven on earth. The group of three small islands is known for its large number of sea turtles that swim in the surrounding waters. Each island has a distinct vibe. Trawangan, the largest and busiest, is artsy and bohemian with lots of boutiques, night markets, and a lively social scene. Gili Air boasts a sizeable indigenous population and some of the best regional cuisine. Sandwiched between the two is Gili Meno enticing sun-lovers with untouched beaches and natural beauty both on land and underwater.
Must-tries: Trawangan night market for fresh seafood and satay. Or diving with hawksbill and green turtles at Meno Wall, also called ‘Turtle Heaven’
Tahiti, French Polynesia

Tahiti, the largest French Polynesian island, is a haven for nature lovers. With a footfall lower than neighbouring Bora Bora and Moorea, it’s an ideal destination to slow down and sit back. Gorgeous black sand beaches line the shore, washed by the cobalt blue waters of the South Pacific Ocean. Tahiti offers a selection of luxury resorts along the coast with dive centres and incredible snorkelling. Travel further inland to verdant landscapes of charming valleys, waterfalls, and towering volcanic mountains. Adding to this lush tropical experience is a delightful mix of culture and an underlying French vibe, making Tahiti a top draw for travelers searching for unusual island experiences.
Must-tries: Humpback whale watching (July-October). Or hiking in Papenoo Valley
Isla Holbox and Mujeres, Mexico

Sun worshippers have fantastic options to choose from in Mexico, such as pristine Isla Holbox and bustling Isla Mujeres. Mexico’s best-kept secrets are located just off Yucatan on the Caribbean Coast. Both islands are famous for their jewel-toned waters and ivory white beaches, but they offer dramatically different experiences to visitors. Mujeres is popular for its hip bars and restaurants, Mayan art and culture, and fantastic diving opportunities. Holbox is a laid-back rustic village with oodles of boho charm, Cuban and Mexican music, and an infectious festive vibe with occasional streetside salsa during the holidays.
Must-tries: Swimming with whale sharks amid bioluminescent plankton in Holbox (summer). Or a dive tour at Cancun Underwater Museum with 500 submerged sculptures
