Going on a safari in Africa is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and the memories you make are sure to stay with you forever. Which is why it is crucial to plan it well!
Choosing a safari destination that works for you can be tricky, because there are so many options in the sprawling and diverse African continent. But don’t worry, we’re here to help you plan your dream African safari holiday by breaking down the decision-making process into five key points.

When can you travel?
March to May: We recommend Botswana
Botswana can be enjoyed all year round, but this period catches the end of the wet season and the start of the dry season, so the floodplains are full, and it makes for great birdwatching and game viewing without the intense heat.
June to October: We recommend Kenya
Head to Kenya during the country’s dry seasons, which also coincides with the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebras.
November to March: We recommend South Africa
The ideal place for a safari is South Africa as it’s during the dry season.
“For the best wildlife viewing, check your seasons. The hotter and drier the better, as you’re likely to have better sightings when the bush is dry. Wildlife gathers around water sources, so it is easier to spot. On the flip side, the wet season is often fantastic for birdwatchers. Consider moving between safari locations to experience different species and landscapes.”

Who are you travelling with?
Families with young children: We recommend South Africa
Many of South Africa‘s hotels and resorts have incredible kids’ clubs, so you can enjoy a break and rest assured that the kids are safe and engaged. Plus, with the best safari parks (Kruger and Gondwana Private Game Reserve) within a short drive from major cities such as Johannesburg and Cape Town, travelling is relatively hassle-free.
Couples: We recommend Kenya or Tanzania
Kenya and Tanzania are perfect destinations for couples as they offer incredible wildlife viewing opportunities as well as pristine beaches. So you can spend the first part of your holiday on safari before enjoying a relaxing break by the beach. With some of the most indulgent honeymoon suites at scenic locations, these two countries are perfect for a romantic holiday in the wild.

What do you want to see?
The Big Five: We recommend Masai Mara or Kruger National Park
For many, ticking off the Big Five (rhinoceros, leopard, buffalo, elephant and lions) is the goal on safari. If that’s the case, you’ll have the best chance in either Masai Mara in Kenya or Kruger National Park in South Africa.
The Great Migration: We recommend Serengeti National Park
One of nature’s greatest spectacles takes place between May and July in Serengeti as millions of wildebeest migrate north. Zebra migrations in Botswana happen from May to November, so time your trip accordingly if you want to see these animals in action.
Which part of Africa do you want to explore?
Desert and plains: We recommend Botswana
Africa is blessed with diverse landscapes. The waterways of Okavango Delta and expansive plains of the Chobe National Park offer some quintessential wildlife experiences. From the sprawling grasslands dotted with exotic flora and the unforgiving Kalahari Desert to the expansive Makgadikgadi salt pans, nature lovers will fall in love with Botswana’s contrasting landscapes.
Mountain and tropical forests: We recommend South Africa.
On the other end of the spectrum, Kruger National Park is lush with mountains and tropical forests, making it a great pick if you want to feast your eyes on some greenery.

What kind of experiences are you interested in?
Water safaris: We recommend Botswana
If the idea of floating through the reeds in a traditional mokoro (dug-out canoe) excites you, Botswana is a great choice.
Walking safaris: We recommend Zambia
Zambia‘s walking safaris offer you an incredible, immersive way to experience Zambia’s diverse wildlife up close.
Beach: We recommend Tanzania and Kenya
If you want the best of both worlds by combining the thrill of safari with a relaxing beach holiday, look no further than Tanzania and Kenya.
Hot air balloon rides: We recommend Serengeti
Soaring over the expanse of the Serengeti at sunrise as you watch the animal world awaken is an unbeatable experience.
Culture: We recommend Masai Mara
African culture is as diverse as it is rich, so spend some time acquainting yourself with the history and culture of the Masai Mara region and its people.
