A vast and fascinating country, the United States of America is a large melting pot of cultures and breathtaking natural beauty. The incredibly diverse landscapes include deep valleys, scenic national parks, stunning coastlines, quaint towns, and bustling metropolises. It also boasts rich and varied culinary experiences.
Many of our Hayes & Jarvis guests are excited to explore the USA, but don’t know where to start! Our experts delve into the contrasting East and West Coasts of America to help you decide which one is right for you.
1. Scintillating Cities

East Coast cities like New York City, Boston and Washington D.C. feel more rooted in history, and have a faster pace of life. The cultural scene is rich, with renowned theaters, museums, and iconic historical landmarks.
West Coast cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and Portland are known for their more laid-back and casual lifestyle. The region is also associated with the entertainment and technology industries. There is also a strong emphasis on outdoor activities and a health-conscious lifestyle.
2. History and Cultural Influences

The East Coast has a heavy European influence brought in by the early settlers who built colonies here. For instance, Virginia was founded by the English in 1607 and New York was founded by the Dutch in 1624. The settlers brought their languages, customs, traditions, and religious beliefs that left a lasting impact on the East Coast’s cultural and architectural heritage. These settlers did not arrive on empty shores: many Native American tribes lived on the East Coast and their cultures are alive today. The National Museum of the American Indian in New York is an excellent place to learn more about the history of these tribes.
European art, literature, and philosophical ideas greatly influenced American thinkers and artists here. Many European immigrants such as the Irish, Italian, French, English, Polish and more continued to arrive on the East Coast throughout history, contributing to the region’s diverse cultural fabric.
The West Coast was shaped by a multitude of factors and the rich cultures and traditions of the Native American tribes including the Navajo, Apache, Pueblo, and many others. Spanish explorers settled on the West Coast leaving a significant mark on the region’s architecture and cultural heritage.
The Mexican period in the 18th century also influenced the region’s culture and cuisine. The California Gold Rush in the mid-19th century triggered a massive influx of people from all over the world and accelerated the development of cities like San Francisco and Sacramento.
3. Climate and Geography

Most of the East Coast experiences all four seasons. The beautiful foliage during the fall season and the vibrant spring bloom make this region a lovely place to visit for most of the year. The farther you travel south, the more tropical the landscape becomes.
The East Coast is a haven for nature enthusiasts. It has an extensive coastline boasting sandy beaches, cliffs, and marshes. National parks like Acadia and Shenandoah have lush forests and are great for hiking, while islands such as the Florida Keys are home to tropical ecosystems and vibrant marine life. The wetlands and estuaries are teeming with wildlife, while the rivers and lakes offer ample opportunities for boating and kayaking.

Unlike the East Coast, the central West Coast is usually warm and sunny throughout the year. While New York on the East Coast experiences a long, snowy winter, Los Angeles on the other hand tends to be warmer during this time.
The West Coast of the United States is also diverse and characterised by stunning coastal landscapes, from rugged cliffs and sandy beaches in California to the lush rainforests of the Pacific Northwest. Majestic mountain ranges like the Sierra Nevada and the Cascade Range offer excellent hiking and skiing opportunities.
National parks such as Yosemite, Yellowstone, and Olympic are home to many iconic natural wonders. The wildlife of the West Coast includes grizzly bears, bald eagles and sea otters. With a mild climate in many areas, the region attracts outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers throughout the year.
4. Things to See and Do

On the East Coast, in New York City, explore iconic landmarks like Times Square, Statue of Liberty, Central Park, and Broadway. In Washington D.C. you can explore the National Mall, Smithsonian Museum, the White House, and historical monuments such as the Lincoln Memorial.
In Boston, walk along the Freedom Trail, visit Fenway Park, and discover the rich history of this New England city. If you love the outdoors, you can go hiking in the Appalachian Mountains or experience the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Many visitors to Florida also make a beeline for the original Disney World.

On the West Coast, embrace the glitz and glamour of Los Angeles, visit Hollywood, and relax on Santa Monica Beach. In San Francisco, walk across the Golden Gate Bridge and visit Alcatraz Island. You must visit Yosemite and Sequoia National Park for their incredible natural beauty.
Tour the tech hub of Silicon Valley if you’d like to see get a glimpse of iconic companies such as Google, Apple and Facebook. For wine lovers, the tastings and scenic drives around the vineyards of Napa and Sonoma Valley is a must-do. Head to Seattle to explore the Space Needle, Pike Place Market, and experience its coffee culture.
5. Culinary Delights

Each region boasts a vibrant food scene, reflecting its unique cultural influences and bountiful local produce. The East Coast’s long history of immigration led to a rich blend of culinary influences from European, African, and Native American cultures. Iconic dishes such as Philly Cheesesteak, southern barbecue, New York-style pizza, New England clam chowder, soul food, Chesapeake Bay blue crabs, and lobster rolls are some of its culinary highlights.

The food of the West Coast draws influence from Asian, Hispanic and Native American cuisines. It also offers a wide range of vegetarian, vegan and organic options for vegetarians and health-conscious travellers. California sushi, Mission-style burritos, cioppino, and fish tacos are some of the West Coast’s favourite dishes.
