Travel is a great way to expose children to new cultures, introduce them to new experiences and build their confidence. You can make lasting memories as a family and explore the world with a renewed sense of wonder. But for many parents, the thought of travelling with kids is overwhelming. From picking a safe destination with enough activities to keep everyone engaged to packing for every eventuality (not to mention long-haul flights and jet lag) travelling with kids presents its own set of challenges.
We asked our expert parents to share their tips on travelling safely with kids, so you can enjoy more quality time as a family with less stress.
1. Pick the right destination
A great rule of thumb is to pick the activity first, and the destination second. Remember that any experience involving animals or beaches is sure to put a smile on most kids’ faces! For wildlife-loving families, there is no better travel experience than an African safari. Swap classroom learning for real world experiences amid the rich environment, culture and wildlife on display in Africa. And when it’s time to relax, head to the beach and let the kids indulge in some free play on the soft white sand.
Eastern Cape in South Africa, Kenya and Mozambique are great options for safari, and can be easily combined with a beach break on the family-friendly island of Mauritius. Alternatively, relax in the sparkling blue waters of Zanzibar after traversing the Serengeti in Tanzania.
2. Choose kid-friendly hotels
Most experts agree that villas or all-inclusive properties that have on-site activities are the best options for kids. Look for amenities such as pools, playgrounds, room service and kids’ clubs, so the little ones have enough opportunities to play. Rooms with a small kitchenette to prepare snacks and some meals will keep kids, and parents happy!
Bonus tip: It’s worth upgrading to a family suite with separate bedrooms so you can still enjoy the evening after the kids have gone to bed.

3. Don’t over-pack
When it comes to packing, again, less is more. Never bring more bags than hands, or you won’t even make it out of the airport without losing your cool. Get a bag for each child, and only pack what fits into it. Letting older children pack their own bags helps build excitement and can teach them important lessons about being organised.
As well as clothes, a few other essentials include medications, a first aid kit, extra sets of swimwear, their favourite toy or security blanket, a couple of books, an iPad, and an international adaptor. If your child is a fussy eater, you might want to bring some familiar snacks from home too.

4. Plan a good mix of activities
While you might love to visit all the museums in the area, kids are likely more interested in picking up shells on the beach or playing on a playground. Aim to combine some activities with plenty of free time. Our experts recommend planning a half-day activity for the morning, then leaving the afternoon free for hanging out at the pool or going for a nature walk. And every third or fourth day, plan a lazy day to let everyone relax and regain some energy.
If your kids are old enough, why not let them be in charge of picking an activity for the day? You could collect some tourist brochures, and let them decide where they want to go. It will build their excitement and sense of responsibility, while empowering them to become great planners and travellers!
5. Make lasting memories
Travel creates lasting memories for the whole family. While photos are important, so are the funny moments and stories that stay in your heart. Encourage kids to keep a journal of their favourite moments and send postcards to loved ones to help cement lasting memories.

Travelling with kids does add an element of stress, but seeing your kid’s face light up when they see an elephant in the wild, discover a new favourite food or learn how to say hello in another language will make it all worthwhile. You’ll rediscover the joy and wonder of travel, while creating precious memories that will last a lifetime.
