Why I love Las Vegas

I have just returned from my sixth trip to Las Vegas; yes sixth! My colleagues at work asked me on my return why I love it so much, why do I choose to go back as much as I do? Well here it is… why I love Vegas: 

Las Vegas Hotel Scents – the power of the fragrance

This might sound really weird, but I love the smell of the hotels, which is a sweet-like aroma they pump out of the air conditioning, mixed with oxygen, in order to keep you as awake as possible. And trust me, it works – I have left many a casino bar with absolutely no concept of time. As soon as I walk back into a hotel in Las Vegas, that subtle perfume instantly hits me and I’m reminded of what an amazing time I am about to have.

I love boozy dinners, maple syrup-fuelled breakfasts, large scale all you can eat buffets – you name it. What a destination offers on the food front is VERY important to me on holiday. Vegas has everything! If you’re looking to grab something cheap and quick, Las Vegas is the home of Five Guys and In-N-Out burger, however it’s also home to some of the world’s most fabulous dining experiences. Some of the world’s top chefs, including Gordon Ramsey and Hubert Keller, have made their mark in Las Vegas, opening restaurants in many of the hotels. Whatever dining scene you’re looking for, it’s there to be enjoyed.

A little adventure – Flightlinez ZipWire

If you’re looking for the ultimate adrenaline experience and time out from the hustle and bustle of The Strip, take a morning out to go to Flightlinez Bootleg Canyon, located just outside Las Vegas. You can experience the beauty of the Canyon on Las Vegas’ very popular ziplining experience, which offers three hours in the sunshine, soaring over the Mojave Desert. With over 1.5 miles of zip line, four separate courses and travelling speeds of up to 60mph, it’s a guaranteed thrill!

The Zip Line not only provides you with an adrenaline-pumping ride but also gives you the opportunity to take in some of the best views of the famous Las Vegas strip, Boulder City, Lake Mead and Eldorado Valley. Don’t worry though, buses will take you to the top so there isn’t a huge amount of hiking involved. Or there’s the zip wire along Fremont Street. You can soar high above over the people wandering the old Las Vegas Strip.  

Alternatively, visit the Grand Canyon – which will exceed every expectation you have of it. There are lots of ways to experience it: a walk along the famous skywalk, a helicopter ride over the Canyon with a champagne breakfast on its historic floor, or an excursion incorporating the Canyon with the Hoover Dam for those who weren’t able to catch a glimpse of it from the plane.

If like me though, you are looking for the ultimate American adventure, why not hire a car. Friends and I drove ourselves to the Grand Canyon in a beautiful, black mustang. There are plenty of companies that offer car hire, we went with Alamo. I couldn’t recommend it enough. The roads were easy to navigate and not overly busy. It took approximately three hours to drive there, and we even stopped at the Hoover Dam on the way.

Hotels: more than a place to rest your head

This one is pretty simple! There’s nowhere else on the planet where hours on end can be spent just exploring a hotel. They’re an attraction in themselves, and whichever one you choose to stay at, you’re guaranteed so much to see and do. My two favourites are the MGM Grand for its art décor and glamour and the ARIA Resort and Casino for its divine swimming pools. The main attraction though is always the same. Gambling! I have tried to get my head around many a roulette table, however hours can be spent just sitting at slot machines. Just politely slip the waitresses a little tip, and free drinks will come your way.

Epic clubbing

I am a self-confessed party animal. There’s no better club scene than that of Las Vegas. And for once, on the other side of the pond, I don’t feel too old. There are smoke machines on steroids, the most beautiful people you’ve ever seen, and generally a much happier, attitude-free club environment. The nightlife is honestly out of this world. My favourite is Omnia in Caesars Palace. Not only is its resident DJ, the one and only Calvin Harris (many of Las Vegas’ clubs have world-famous DJs) but its outside terrace boasts amazing views down The Strip.

Take a dip

Vegas swimming pools come in all shapes and sizes, from quiet to lively, man-made beach scenes to shark-tank-lined lagoons, even swim-up gambling pools. Why I love Vegas and its swimming pools though, is for the pool parties. The pool party scene started on the small island of Ibiza and while thousands still flock to the Spanish isle for their day party fix, Vegas has taken it up a level and made it better, bigger, and more electrifying.  Many hotels will host parties and have world-famous DJs headlining. My favourite? Encore Beach Club at the Encore Hotel – to date, one of the best days of my life!

Eye spy

People watching is one of my favourite things to do, ever. Whether I’m sitting square-side in Italy or strip-view in Vegas, I can while the hours away people watching. Vegas’ Strip is full of the weird and wonderful, from superheroes to The Hangover scenes. The best thing about people watching in Vegas? I don’t think I’ve ever been to a destination where everyone is as happy. Everyone’s there to have fun and this adult-playground atmosphere certainly rubs off and is shown all over people’s faces. 

The party never stops

I love that there’s always something going on. Got insomnia? Head out at 5am and you will find a bar open and ready to serve!

So if you haven’t considered Las Vegas for yourself, I dare you to try it -party animal or not. Vegas sucks you in, spits you out, and leaves you with the most outrageous memories like it has done for me. The memories I take from it is the main reason I love Las Vegas.  And HONESTLY, there is something for everyone here. My parents are about to overtake me claiming their next trip to be their seventh.  This is what my mother had to say about her favourite destination:

“My husband and I enjoy going back to Vegas because every trip is different. There is always something new to see! However much we like to relax, Pina Colada in hand around the swimming pool, I very much enjoy being able to get about and kept entertained. Whether it’s to watch the Bellagio fountains, or to have a play at the slot machines, we never, ever get bored. Now I’m hoping the next trip will be as a family!” Wendy Oliver.
