Africa’s tourism industry is undergoing a revolution led by some incredibly inspiring and determined women. As part of our commitment to responsible travel, we wanted to introduce you to some of the organisations and women who are transforming travel in Africa.
Let them inspire you to explore everything Africa has to offer.
Black Mambas, South Africa
In South Africa, a team of brave women leads the Balule Nature Reserve’s Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit. The main objective of the group is to protect rhinos from poachers. The Black Mambas have a dual strategy approach that involves ‘visual policing’ through boundary patrols on foot every morning and in vehicles at sundown, and educating the local community.
The Black Mambas believe that the war on poaching can’t be won with guns and bullets but through education. Rangers make weekly visits to local schools and teach students about poaching. Whilst educating children and young adults about their surrounding environment, they raise awareness about the need for conservation. Since the Black Mambas deployment, there has been a significant decrease in poaching and snaring in the area.

Dunia Camp, Tanzania
The only all-female camp in the Serengeti, Dunia Camp is home to a group women who are transforming travel in Africa. This camp is affectionately known as the “Angels of the Serengeti”, after its manager, Angel Vendeline Namshali.
“Having an all-woman camp has proved that we have a lot of women out there with the capacity and interest to work, but who lack moral and financial support,” says Angel. Her goal is to prove that women can do anything men can do.
The 16 staff members manage all the jobs at the eight-room tented camp, from security watch, guiding and chasing away animals from the unfenced camp, through to cooking and cleaning. Guests are treated like family and greeted with a lively song and dance from the ladies. The camp is well-equipped to ensure you enjoy the perfect mix of luxury and adventure whilst supporting the future success of women in Tanzania. Whilst you’ll be sad to leave, the goodbye song will be a treasured memory of this pioneering camp in the bush.
Chobe Game Lodge, Botswana
A leader in sustainable tourism, Chobe Game Lodge in Botswana prides itself on leading the way in socially and environmentally responsible travel. As well as a dynamic team of all-female safari guides, 65% of the camp staff are women.
Chobe Game Lodge leads the way with its sustainability initiatives, such as its share profit scheme and youth development programs, electric-powered safari vehicles, recycled building products, and recycling initiatives. In 2012, the property was awarded the highest ecotourism level in the country by Botswana Tourism Organisation.
Guests will love unwinding in the spacious lodges, each with a private verandah overlooking the river where wildlife spotting opportunities abound. After a safari, relax in the large swimming pool or laze on the deck with a refreshing sundowner.
