Spend four days travelling Australia from north to south on The Ghan Expedition. Named after the Afghan cameleers who first ventured into the Red Centre over 150 years ago, the Ghan train allows you to experience numerous Australian landscapes. Wetlands and creeks give way to the country’s dramatic ochre lands, before turning into luscious green fields and pastoral lands.
Aboard the train you’ll travel in style. Luxurious rooms offer comfort and a relaxing atmosphere, as well as big screen windows. Dine on fine foods including barramundi, beef and saltbush in the opulent Queen Adelaide Restaurant. While away your evenings reclining with a glass of wine in the Outback Explorer Lounge.
Begin your old world railway adventure in Darwin and stop off at the awe inspiring Katherine Gorge. By day two you’ll be well into the outback, enjoying a full day of off train excursions and an al fresco dinner under the stars. Venture below ground on day three; Coober Pedy is the opal mining capital of the world and is home to a labyrinth of underground tunnels and caves. You’ll arrive at your final destination, Adelaide, in the morning. The day is yours to discover the city’s markets, exhibitions and beaches.

Trip Highlights
- Explore gorges and waterfalls in Katherine Gorge
- Take a flight over Uluru
- Venture underground into the world's mining capital
- Shop Adelaide's markets
Start your Journey
Darwin and Katherine Gorge
Arrive at 10am on the first day of your railway adventure and take a couple of hours to settle into your luxurious cabin. Watch through your large screen window as Darwin’s ochre lands speed past before making your way to the Queen Adelaide Restaurant for lunch. Dine on native Australian fare like kangaroo and rosella flower. Your first off train excursion is to the captivating sandstone cliffs of Katherine Gorge; you’ll be back on board in time to watch the sun set over dinner.
Alice Springs
Watch the sun rise over the outback as the train makes its way on to Alice Springs. A full day of off train excursions awaits. Explore the town’s famous historic landmarks or plunge yourself into the heart of Australia’s marvellous flora and fauna on one of the many walking trails. There’s also the opportunity to upgrade your excursion with a breath taking flight over Uluru and Kata Tjuta. Come nightfall you’ll hear an astronomer talk as you feast on a BBQ under the stars.
Coober Pedy
On your third day on the train you’ll wake up in what feels like the middle of nowhere. The opal mining capital of the world, in Coober Pedy more than half of the residents live underground. Learn to live like the natives as you weave through the town’s tunnels and caves – you can even enjoy a gourmet lunch underground. Back on the train, wind down in the Outback Explorer Lounge after an exciting day.
Arrive into Adelaide
You’ll know you’ve reached South Australia when the red earth of the Northern Territory has become luscious and green. Although your time on the Ghan train has come to an end, there are plenty of sights to see in Adelaide. Stroll through the Central Market, snacking on fresh foods as you go. Feel the sand beneath your toes on one of the long stretches of sandy beach, or shop on the tree lined street of the city centre.
Extend your stay in South Australia by spending a couple of days exploring the Barossa Valley wine region and wildlife sanctuary on Kangaroo Island.
