At a time when most people went on safari to shoot animals with guns, Norman Carr pioneered the idea of shooting animals with your camera instead. He wanted people to appreciate the wildlife in their natural habitat and to enjoy their surroundings. He was also one of the first to see the importance of working with rather than against the local community, so when he developed his first camp he did so in agreement and partnership with the local chief. Since first opening over 60 years ago, Norman Carr now operates five camps.
With an emphasis on superb guiding, wild yet beautiful locations and private accommodation built from local materials, wonderful meals and friendly service, these are widely regarded as the best camps in Zambia and therefore are some of the most sought after in Africa.
Norman Carr Walking Safaris are the only operator in the Luangwa to have a full walking circuit of camps. These are specifically located so that you can walk between them. The walks are at a leisurely pace and you do not need a high level of fitness. If you do not want to walk the whole circuit you can choose to game drive instead, combine a walk with a drive or choose to stay at one camp and walk from there each day. Your bags will even be transported separately and waiting in your room when you arrive at the next camp.
Whether you choose to stay in one camp or several to explore a wider area, you can rest assured you'll have an amazing safari adventure.

Start your Journey
Arrival and your safari experience begins
Fly in to Mfuwe airport and be transferred to Chinzombo. This drive is part game drive as there is a high chance of seeing wildlife as you travel along. Chinzombo is an ultra-luxurious bush camp set on the banks of the Luangwa River, the perfect place to start your safari.
The days are yours to do with as you wish, spend each day on game drives and safari walks, just relax at the camp or split your time between adventure and relaxation, the chose is yours. As the camp is on the edge of a riverbank often you can enjoy the wildlife right from your location.
If in the mood for a little pampering, book a treatment at the Ebony Spa where all products are made using healing herbal plants found in the bush before moving to your next camp.
The second camp
In the morning transfer along the river to Kakuli, your home for the next three nights, arriving in time for lunch and to settle in. During your stay you will enjoy sunset boat cruises, more walking safaris and game drives (drives not possible January to April) plus boat safaris.
This area is famous for its hippo and crocodile numbers and is an excellent spot for photography and birding.
On the last day you are transferred to Lusaka airport for either your flight home or continue your African adventure.
