Set in southwestern Iceland, the fjord of Borgarfjörður occupies a vast area between Reykjavik and Snӕfellsnes Peninsula.

Just half an hour’s drive away from the capital city of Reykjavik via the Hvalfjarðargögn underwater tunnel, this stunning region is replete with lava fields, gushing hot springs, and tinkling waterfalls. The area is home to what is popularly known as the most powerful hot spring on the continent – Deildartunguhver, which has been used by locals for cooking and heating over centuries. Together with the Krauma Geothermal Baths, historic Reykholt, and the two waterfalls Hraunfossar and Barnafoss, Deildartunguhver forms the Silver Circle.

The geothermal wonderland of Borgarfjörður is washed by several rivers that offer fantastic salmon fishing opportunities. Horseback riding is one of the most popular activities in the area, alongside lava cave explorations, especially at Viðgelmir, the longest lava cave in the country. Borgarfjörður is home to a scenic mountain landscape that invites adventure lovers and hiking enthusiasts. Nearby, visitors can also explore the Langjökull ice cap, the second-largest in Iceland. Here you can make use of a man-made ice tunnel that allows you to explore inside glacier, making it the only destination on earth where people can see such a giant ice sheet towering over them.

Several small towns exist in the fjord, such as Borgarnes and Hvanneyri which are primarily rural settlements. The town of Reykholt is historically significant as an erstwhile intellectual centre of Iceland. It was home to Snorri Sturluson, author of Edda, the most important historical source about Norse mythology and Scandinavia.

Over the years, the landscape has inspired several poets and authors, including J.R.R. Tolkien, of The Lord of the Rings fame, and more recently, George R. R. Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire, as well as composer Richard Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen music dramas.
