Often referred to as ‘hot springs town’, the Icelandic municipality of Hveragerði is located on the main Ring Road in the south.

Just half an hour southwards from Reykjavik, this picturesque town makes for a great stop on the iconic Route 1, or Ring Road. With just 2,500 inhabitants, the offers basic facilities such as a service centre, a supermarket, a gas station and a cafe. Beautiful botanical gardens surround the region and there are several great hiking trails for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy in the summer months. Hveragerði is also home to several museums, including the Hveragerdi Stone and Mineral Museum that displays one of the largest privately-owned stone collections in the country, and the year-round LÁ Art Museum.

Greenhouses have flourished in Hveragerði owing to the high geothermal activity in the area. In fact, this is known as the centre of botany in all of Iceland. Hot water runs just below the surface and one can cook food just by burying it underground for a few hours. This unique method of cooking food is a huge draw for tourists.

The geothermal park, built to help people safely explore the area, offers visitors a host of activities including hot spring footbaths, or egg boiling in hot springs. Numerous hot springs and mud pits sprout from the scenic hills located near town. A river fed by hot springs runs through Reykjadalur Valley nearby, where visitors can bathe in the warm water.
