The southernmost village on the mainland, the quaint town of Vík is located on the famous Ring Road of Iceland. Used as a meeting point for traders and farmers in the past, the town was acknowledged as an established community only in the 1930s when the red-roofed Víkurkirkja Church was built. Located on a hill, the famous church is considered the safest shelter in the event of a sudden volcanic eruption at the Katla Volcano nearby. Today, the village houses about 300 residents and an increasing number of hotels, guesthouses, and inns for travellers. With no other settlements within a 50-kilometer radius, Vík also offers an important rest stop where visitors can take a break, refuel, and restock for their onward journey.

Thanks again to its southerly location, Vík boasts a milder climate than many other Icelandic towns and villages. Thus, it is home to several species of birds, such as arctic terns found to the east near Reynisfjall Mountain, and puffins found at Dyrhólaey. Several marine animals also inhabit these parts, such as seals that are sometimes seen sunbathing on the black sand beach, or whales and dolphins swimming close to land.

The town boasts an outdoor geothermal pool where locals and visitors alike can bathe in at any time of the year. Nearby, Reynisfjara Beach is considered one of the most striking beaches in the world with its gigantic basalt columns and sea stacks. Several hikes and treks are possible to do in and around Vík, including hikes in Mýrdalsjökull Glacier, Katla ice cave explorations, and snowmobiling tours across Solheimajokull glacier.
