Things To Do In Mexico

There is no question too small. Start planning your dream trip by talking to our Destination Specialists

4. Go back in time at Teotihuacan

About 40 km from Mexico City lies the impressive ruins of Teotihuacan, considered the first ‘metropolis’ of the Americas by many. Known as the ‘City of Gods’, the archaeological site dates back to 300 BC and has some of the largest pyramids in the world.

Take a guided tour of its structures, still in remarkable condition, or choose to go on a hot air balloon ride over the complex for a unique perspective.

5. Travel to Oaxaca for a rich cultural immersion

Steeped in customs and traditions, a tour of Oaxaca is an incredibly enriching experience. Learn about the region’s rich arts and crafts heritage at Aripo, browse through a dazzling range of handicrafts, sign up for a workshop or pick up a few souvenirs.

Oaxaca is a food connoisseur’s delight – go on mezcal tasting sessions, dive into flavourful moles and sample local chocolates. It is all part of what makes a trip to Oaxaca one of the top things to do in Mexico.

6. Hang out at Zocalo

Mexico City’s main square, Zocalo, is always abuzz with visitors, performers and more. The square is also home to some of the city’s most important buildings: the Supreme Court, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace.

Many city tours start from the Zocalo. While anytime is a good time to visit the square, we recommend going in the evenings, with music and dance filling its spaces and soldiers marching by.

7. Go on a trajinera ride in Xochimilco

A short half-hour drive from Mexico City takes you to Xochimilco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a trip here is one of the best things to do in Mexico.

A visit to Xochimilco is fun-filled and gives a taste of the local culture. An important flower-producing centre, experience its floating gardens aboard a trajinera, colourfully decorated flat bottomed boats, as it glides through winding canals.

8. Experience Mexico City’s pulsating nightlife

From rooftop lounges and swanky bars to elegant restaurants, the city’s nightlife is vibrant and varied. Mexico City’s charming neighbourhoods present fabulous opportunities to dress up and enjoy a night out in town.

Grab a drink at Centro Histórico just as the sun goes down and the city starts to light up, go bar hopping at Polanco, dance the night away in Roma and dine on fine Mexican and international cuisine at La Condesa; experiencing the city’s nightlife is one of the most exciting things to do in Mexico.

9. Lose yourself in the chaos of Mexico City’s markets

One of the best ways to delve deep into the country’s culture and customs is to take leisurely strolls through its bustling markets. The biggest of them is the Central de Abasto, the wholesale market for the city and many other parts of the country.

It is busy and not for the fainthearted. Mercado Roma, on the other hand, provides a more sophisticated experience with its gourmet food stalls and eclectic selections. Those looking for handicrafts and souvenirs to take home will love the colourful stalls at La Ciudadela.

10. Unwind on the beaches of Puerto Vallarta

If Mexico City is all about colour and chaos, Puerto Vallarta is about elegant beachside relaxation, and together they make for a memorable holiday itinerary. Los Muertos Beach is one of the most popular strips of

sand here. There is plenty to do here – from participating in water sports to watching the sunset with a drink in hand at one of the beachfront restaurants. Sunbathe in Playa Palmeras and swim in the calm waters at Playa las Gemelas. For something a little out of the ordinary, take a tour of the Marieta Islands and head to ‘Hidden Beach’, which has plenty of opportunities for scuba diving and snorkelling.
