Things To Do In New Zealand

There is no question too small. Start planning your dream trip by talking to our Destination Specialists

4. Relax on the picturesque beaches of the Coromandel Peninsula

A region of incredible beauty, the Coromandel Peninsula is one of the best places to visit in New Zealand. Located on North Island and just a one-and-a-half hour drive from Auckland, the coastline is known for its scenic beaches, alluring waterfalls, dense rainforests and more.

Catch an uplifting sunrise at the region’s most photographed point, Cathedral Cove, a rock formation that frames the ocean in the most beautiful way; a visit there is one of the top things to do in New Zealand. Hike up the Pinnacles or trek the Coromandel Coastal Walkway; both provide a different perspective of the region. For a more relaxing experience, dig out a spa pool and soak in the warm waters of the Hot Water Beach.

5. Explore New Zealand’s magnificent national parks

New Zealand’s varied and breathtaking landscapes are best experienced through stays and explorations in its national parks. With endless trails and awe-inspiring sceneries, the country is a trekker’s delight. If you are feeling adventurous, embark on the challenging Tongariro Alpine Crossing hike, in Tongariro National Park, which showcases craters, vibrantly coloured lakes, lava fields and more.

In contrast, Abel Tasman National Park reveals New Zealand’s dazzling coastline. Hike the Coast Track, one of New Zealand’s Great Walks that hugs the waters and cuts through pristine beaches. In Mount Cook National Park, a recognised International Dark Sky Reserve, turn your attention skywards as the dark skies reveal a million stars and several constellations.

6. Spot whales in Kaikoura

More than 15 species of whales and dolphins visit the waters off Kaikoura, the whale-watching capital of the country, making a trip here one of the most exciting things to do in New Zealand. Head out on rewarding boat tours and spot several species of dolphins, orcas, humpback whales and the star attraction, sperm whales.

Plane and helicopter tours over these wildlife-rich waters are also available and provide a different perspective of the region. Kaikoura is a year-round whale watching destination as sperm whales reside in these waters throughout the year. The best time to spot the most variety of whales and dolphins, however, is from June to August

7. Wine and dine at the country’s charming vineyards

Though New Zealand is not the first name that pops up when wine is mentioned, the country is, nevertheless, home to world-class vineyards and award-winning wines. The most popular wine-producing region is the Marlborough region which gained popularity owing to its exquisite Sauvignon Blanc.

Go vineyard hopping, sample the region’s best wines, and learn about the fine art of winemaking. In Hawke’s Bay, rent a bicycle and pedal to some of the most picturesque vineyards of New Zealand. Known for its chardonnays, the region is also an acclaimed food and wine destination. Auckland and nearby Waiheke Island are also home to fabulous vineyards that promise great wine and memorable experiences.

8. Seek out adventure in Queenstown

Often considered the adventure capital of the world, Queenstown calls out to all those seeking an adrenaline high. The town is famous for bungee jumping, and there are quite a few options to pick from. Go jet boating, a Queenstown favourite, on the Shotover River for a thrilling boat ride or skydive from a plane; there is no shortage of heart-in-your-mouth moments here.

You could also hike up Queenstown Hill or ride the Luge at the top of the skyline. During winters, Queenstown provides some of the best slopes for skiers.

9. Come upon the majestic Franz Josef Glacier

One of the most memorable things to do in New Zealand is a tour of the Franz Josef Glacier, an experience which leaves most travellers in awe. Hike the Franz Josef Glacier Valley Walk and revel in its magnitude or choose a guided walk that provides a deeper understanding of the region’s geology, flora, and fauna.

For a top-down view of the glacier and the surrounding mountains, go on a helicopter tour of the area or sign up for a heli-hiking experience where participants get dropped via helicopter and can hike on and around the glacier.

10. Go on a ‘Lord Of The Rings’ tour

It is no surprise that New Zealand has served as the backdrop to many movies, the most popular being the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Walk through the Shire, its charming homes and delightful scenery, filmed in the undulating hills of Matamata in North Island. Visit the Weta Workshop in Wellington to get a look and understanding of the mind-boggling behind-the-scenes work that went into making this classic come alive.

Visit more cities, towns and rural locations that made their way or inspired the movie; it is unquestionably one of the best things to do in New Zealand for movie lovers and pop culture enthusiasts.
