Best time to visit Toronto- By season

Summer – The summer season runs from June to August, which is undoubtedly the best time to visit Toronto. During this period, Toronto sees temperatures in the mid to upper 20s and plenty of daylight hours. Patio restaurants pop up, and with festivals and music concerts to attend, it is an incredibly lively time of the year to visit the city. It is also Toronto’s high season, so planning ahead is essential.

Autumn – Toronto experiences a short autumn season from September to October. During September, temperatures are still around 18-22°C, and there are still plenty of things to see and do in Toronto, making it one of the best times to visit Toronto. By the end of September, reds, oranges and goldens start to appear on trees. By early October, fall colours are in full glory in parks and neighbourhoods.

Winter – Toronto has a relatively long winter season that starts in November and goes on until March. Expect freezing or sub-zero temperatures along with wind chill during these months. However, the city does not go into hibernation. Contrary to that, the festive spirit pervades the entire city during November and December, with markets popping up and skating rinks filled with locals and visitors. It is a great time to try out winter sports, such as skiing and visit indoor events that keep the mood upbeat.

Spring – The city experiences a short spring season in April and May. The season starts with somewhat unpredictable weather, but by the end of April, things start to warm up. May is considered shoulder season, and though not as warm as the summer months, is still pleasant enough to participate in outdoor activities. It is the best time to visit Toronto, Canada before the high season starts. Expect a mix of rainy, cold and warm days and pack accordingly.

What to pack for Toronto?

Your packing list for Toronto depends entirely on when you are visiting the city. Summers call for shorts, easy breezy tops and T-shirts. However, there can be a nip in the air after sunset, so pack a light jacket or sweater. There are plenty of outdoor spaces to explore, so a pair of comfortable sandals or sneakers are a must.

Dressing for spring and fall is all about layers. The temperature during these seasons can be pretty unpredictable, so it is advisable to pack layers that you can put on or take off depending on the weather. Long sleeve T-shirts, shirts, and full trousers are recommended, along with warmer layers such as a light jacket, fleece or a sweater.

Winters in Toronto are harsh, and wind chill can make temperatures seem colder than they are. Bring your thickest, warmest jackets, thermals, gloves, woollen scarves, hats and winter boots.

When travelling to Toronto, it is best to have a rain jacket or umbrella handy for sudden downpours.
