Best time to visit Peru- By season

Peru experiences two seasons – dry and wet.

Dry season: Peru’s dry season runs from May to October and is the best time of the year to visit Peru. Temperatures range from the mid-20s in Machu Picchu to the mid teens in Puno and the Colca Canyon. June, July and August are, by far, the busiest months to visit Peru. If you are visiting during this time, you will have to book anywhere from 6 to 12 months in advance, especially for treks to Machu Picchu. Just outside this period lies the shoulder season; the months of May, September and October offer travellers excellent weather conditions with relatively leaner crowds. The only exceptions to this are the coastal cities, like Lima, that see a thick cloud cover called La Garua from May to October.

Wet season: Peru’s rainy season extends from November to April. The country sees its heaviest rainfall from January to March. November and April are good months to visit Peru if you are ready for the occasional shower. In the coastal regions, however, it is a different story. The best time to visit Peru for its coastal cities is from December to March when the skies are clear, and temperatures are warm.

Best time to visit Peru – By region

Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley, & Cuzco – The dry season from April to November is the best time to visit Machu Picchu and Sacred Valley. During this period, the trails are dry, and there is plenty of sunshine, making hiking to the ruins a pleasant affair. From mid-December to March, the Andes highlands experience heavy rains. You can still trek during the rainy season except in February when the Inca Trail closes; the Machu Picchu, however, is still open.

Amazon jungle – The best time to visit Peru to explore the Amazon jungle is from May to September, when dry conditions force wildlife to water sources, and mosquito menace is at its least. From October to April, heavy rains make hikes challenging and wildlife spotting tough.

Coastal region – The best time to visit the coastal towns of Peru is from November to March when clear skies and warm temperatures allow for unlimited beach fun.

What to pack for Peru?

Peru’s weather changes quite drastically from region to region, so if you plan to visit different locations, it is best to be ready for all kinds of conditions.

One of the most important things while packing for Peru is to take layers. There are significant differences in temperature due to altitude and time of day. Pack a few short and long sleeve T-shirts made from water-resistant fabric and warmer layers such as fleece, woollens and jackets. Depending on where and when you are travelling, you might need gloves and a warm hat too. Lightweight, quick-dry pants are an excellent addition to your packing list. Good-quality rain jackets and sturdy hiking boots are a must while travelling to Peru.

If visiting a beach town is part of your itinerary, take swimwear, sunscreen and comfortable sandals or flip-flops. Bug spray is a must, especially if you are heading to the Amazon.
