Overview of South Africa
South Africa’s cities buzz with life – electrifying concerts, bustling downtowns and fabulous events.
South Africa is located in the Southern Hemisphere and experiences seasons that are the opposite of those felt in the Northern hemisphere at the same time.
Summer – South Africa’s summer runs from December to February, and this is also when the country, except for the Western Cape, sees the most rainfall. Book a South Africa twin-centre holiday in the summer and tour the glittering capital of Cape Town along with Johannesburg or Joburg, as the locals call it. It’s the best time of the year to go to South Africa for its stunning beaches and water adventures. Swim, surf or say hello to African penguins at Cape Town’s picturesque beaches. Durban and the beaches along the Garden Route are also incredibly popular amongst locals and visitors alike.
Autumn – The months from March to May are considered the autumn season in South Africa. March marks the end of the rainy season in the northern parts of the country. You will find Kruger lush and green. Weather conditions are pleasant, and it’s a great time to visit the country.
Winter – It’s the winter season from June to August in South Africa, and while it is dry in most parts of the country, the Western Cape sees the most rainfall. It’s the best time to visit South Africa for safaris. Dry conditions and a scarcity of water drive the animals to waterholes making game viewing conditions just perfect. It’s also the start of the whale watching season.
Spring – The months of September to November see the Western Cape covered with blooming flowers, a sure sign that the country has entered spring. Wildlife viewing continues to be good, and it’s the best time to visit South Africa if you want to do a mix of activities and visit multiple destinations.
Explore Capetown – You will find plenty to do, throughout the year, at South Africa’s most visited city. The summer months, from December to February, are the most popular time to travel here. However, the shoulder season, from March to May and September to November, are also good months to visit the city.
Safaris – A dry landscape and scarcity of water make the period from May to September the best time to go to South Africa for wildlife safaris.
Beaches- The summer months from November to March are the perfect time to experience the country’s sun, surf and sand.
Whale watching – The main whale watching period runs from July to November, with September and October being the peak months. Hermanus, Plettenberg Bay and the Garden Route are the best places to spot whales such as humpback, sperm whales and more.
Birdwatching – The period from October to March is the best time to visit South Africa for birdwatching. The region is lush and green, and while it is not a great time for wildlife viewing, it is the best time to spot some of the 500+ species of birds in Kruger National Park.
From roughing it out on thrilling safaris and heading out for wine tasting sessions, to catching some sun on some of the country’s most gorgeous beaches, there’s a variety of activities on offer in South Africa. What you pack for your holiday will depend on what you plan to experience in the country.
If you are planning a safari vacation, pack lightweight clothing in shades of khaki, green and brown. Long sleeve T-shirts or tops and full-length cargo or hiking pants work best.
Layering is essential during early morning and late evening safaris as it can get chilly. Pack a light jacket, a wide-brimmed sun hat, and a pair of binoculars for when you head out on safaris. Comfortable footwear is a must for bush walks and hikes, so pack good quality walking or hiking shoes. Mosquitoes and insects can be a problem at some safari camps, so carry insect repellent cream or wristbands.
Those heading to the beach will need to pack a few swimsuits, cover ups, sunscreen, sunglasses and sandals.
There’s plenty to see and do in South Africa’s cities. Be sure to take along comfortable walking shoes. Casual or athleisure clothing is ideal for daytime sightseeing, but you will need to pack a few dresses or smart shirts and trousers for night outs and wine tasting sessions. Most upmarket dining establishments and nightclubs require men to wear formal shoes.
