Things To Do In South Korea

There is no question too small. Start planning your dream trip by talking to our Destination Specialists

Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond

4. Discover ancient tales at Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond

Uncover the history of the ancient kingdom of Silla at the historical Gyeongju National Park. Among its highlights is the 7th-century Donggung Palace: a highly ornate palace that was once the official residence of Silla’s princes. Stroll through its striking ruins, uncovering tales from history. You’ll even pass through the room where King Gyeongsun of Silla once feasted with King Wang Geon of Goryeo in 931 and discussed the invasion of Gyeon Hwon.

Another unmissable attraction in Gyeongju National Park is the Wolji Pond (meaning ‘a pond that reflects the moon’). The oval-shaped pond was commissioned by King Munmu in 674 AD and originally had three small islands at its centre. As you admire its remains, try to picture what it would have looked like when it was first built; surrounded by swaying trees and bursting with plant life.

Gamcheon Cultural Village in Busan

5. Admire the vibrant colours of Gamcheon Culture Village

Perhaps one of South Korea’s most photogenic towns, you’ll find Gamcheon Culture Village nestled in the mountains on the outskirts of Busan. The village may seem like a peaceful destination today but it has a tumultuous history – including being used as a temporary settlement for refugees during the Korean War.

In 2009, several local artists and residents revived the village and painted its houses in a kaleidoscope of pastel shades. As well as its eye-catching facades and elevated location, Gamcheon has a unique layout that has helped earn it the nickname ‘the Machu Picchu of Busan’. Make sure to add it to your bucket list, both for its breathtaking views and colourful architecture.

A traditional hanok in Jeonju

6. Spend the night in a traditional hanok

If you’d like to go one step further with your immersion into Korean culture, allow us to arrange an overnight stay in a traditional hanok. Many villages allow visitors to stay in special guest houses, including those found in the famously attractive Jeonju Hanok Village.

Typically, hanok are constructed out of wood and all their doors and windows look out onto a peaceful front garden This outlook on nature makes staying in a hanok a very relaxing experience. You could also enhance your stay with other traditional activities such as a local cooking class or an authentic tea-making ceremony.

Templestay in South Korea

7. Learn more about Korean Buddhism with Templestay

Since being introduced to the country by nearby China over 2000 years ago, Buddhism has been one of Korea’s major religions. If you’d like to learn more about its cultural impact and practices, consider Templestay. It’s a unique cultural program which allows travellers to Korea to visit and stay at various traditional temples scattered all over South Korea.

During your visit with Templestay, you’ll witness firsthand the life of local Buddhist practitioners.

They’ll encourage you to leave your busy routine behind and discover your ‘true self’ through a mix of tailored activities, including traditional tea ceremonies, meditation and chanting, and delicious group meals. It’s a truly transformative experience and not one to be missed!

The DMZ border area between North and South Korea

8. Embark on a guided tour of the DMZ

In addition to ancient history, Korea has plenty of modern stories to uncover. If you’d like to learn more about its recent past, allow us to arrange a guided tour of the DMZ: the border territory that divides South and North Korea.

The DMZ is an incredibly intriguing place and a unique destination to add to your South Korean travel itinerary. A guided tour will take you to several key sites and exhibitions where you can delve deeper into the area’s history and significance. This includes the Freedom Bridge, Jinak Pavilion, and the DMZ Museum. You could also stop off at the Dora Observatory where you can gaze through binoculars at North Korea’s infamous propaganda village.

Statue of ‘Gangnam Style’ outside Bongeunsa Station in Seoul

9. Experience Seoul’s lively K-Pop scene

Seoul isn’t just a city famed for its historical and culinary delights. South Korea’s capital is also a fantastic location to soak up contemporary Korean culture, including its much-loved K-pop scene.

There are numerous ways to experience K-pop in Seoul. HiKR Ground is a brilliant place to start. This modern cultural centre features four floors of interactive attractions, including a K-pop-themed museum and a recording studio where you can film your very own music videos. Next, make a beeline for the iconic YG building. Situated in the Hongdae district, it’s the headquarters of one of Korea’s biggest record labels currently representing several major K-pop stars, including BLACKPINK and Psy.

Elsewhere, you’ll be able to browse music-themed merchandise at SameE Cafe. Alternatively, head for the Gangnam area to stroll along K-star Road: a shopping street featuring high-end stores, cafes, and bear-shaped sculptures decorated with K-pop music group mascots. Gangam also houses the Coex Mall where you’ll find two cultural icons: the Gangnam Style statue and the Starfield Library where numerous K-dramas have been filmed.

Shopping district in Seoul

10. Make the most of Korea’s excellent shopping opportunities

If you’re craving a little retail therapy, South Korea couldn’t be a better destination to visit. The country offers up a wide range of shopping experiences, whether you want to browse the latest fashion in its huge department stores or grab a bargain at a duty-free outlet shop.

When it comes to purchasing souvenirs for your trip, you’ll find many local handicraft markets to explore. Individual regions tend to sell their own unique items, too. For example, you’ll be able to pick up exquisite handmade ceramics in Busan and intricately decorated spirit masks in Andong.

If you’re organising a visit to South Korea between June and August or December and February, keep an eye out for off-season sales. This includes the Korea Grand Sale which offers shoppers huge discounts on clothing, beauty services, hotels and more.
