Overview of Vietnam
In the beautiful north of Vietnam is Hanoi, centre of the French Indochina administration and home to well-preserved colonial architecture.
History is everywhere in this beautiful riverside town located on the banks of the Perfume River. The seat of the Nguyen Dynasty, Hue, is filled with historical monuments to explore such as the Imperial City and the Royal Tombs, temples and pagodas such as the Huyen Tan Princess Temple, the Tu Hieu and Thien Mu Pagodas.
As the day draws to a close, head to the waterfront promenade of the Perfume River, the perfect place to sample Hue’s royal cuisine and embark on a delightful cruise.
With its refreshing rice terraces, cool mountain air and opportunities for trekking, Sapa is one of the best places to visit in Vietnam. Sapa offers a peek into rural Vietnam, with its charming villages and traditions.
Head out on single-day and multi-day hikes; it is the best way to appreciate the region’s mountainous terrain and know more about its rich culture and customs.
The rice bowl of Vietnam, Mekong Delta is known as much for its winding waterways as it is for the quaint towns that thrive on its abundance. Make a stop at Can Tho, known for the Cai Rang Floating Market and sample the freshest fruits, farm-to-boat style! Explore Vietnam’s idyllic countryside on two wheels or opt for a luxury cruise; some go all the way to Cambodia.
The mighty Mekong is studded with charming towns and villages along its banks. Admire the artistry of the pagodas of Mỹ Tho, stroll through orchards and paddy fields and get a taste of Khmer culture in Sóc Trăng, which has among the largest settlements of Khmer people outside of Cambodia.
Lush, dense forests meet turquoise blue seascapes on Cat Ba Island, making a visit here one of the best things to do in Vietnam for adventure seekers and outdoor lovers. Traverse through Cat Ba National Park, and discover waterfalls, hidden beaches, caves, and an incredible diversity of flora. Rent a kayak and paddle to Lan Ha Bay.
Work up a sweat on a trek to Ngu Lam Peak, a viewpoint that opens out to rows and rows of mountains. Bring the day to a close at Cannon Fort, one of the best spots on the island to bask in enchanting sunsets.
With more than 3,000 km of coastline, Vietnam’s beaches are veritable slices of paradise that offer visitors a respite from its busy cities. Head to Phu Quoc, a stunning island off the coast of Cambodia, for its white sand beaches and stunning waterfalls.
Snorkel in the waters off Con Dao islands and catch some sun at Nha Trang. In Da Nang, a popular beach town, spend days trying out water sports at My Khe Beach and checking out inland attractions such as Ba Na Hills and Marble Mountains.
Located 70 km from the Ho Chi Minh City centre, the Cu Chi Tunnels are a solemn reminder of the country’s turbulent past. Part of a much more extensive network, the Cu Chi Tunnels were used as hideouts for Viet Cong soldiers.
Explore these multilevel tunnel complexes at the Ben Dinh and Ben Duoc sites as you squeeze your way and crawl through dimly lit passages, and learn about life during those times. A word of caution – these narrow tunnels are not recommended for those with breathing and blood pressure issues or those with claustrophobia.
Located in the northern part of Vietnam, Ninh Binh is famous for its soothing mountain sceneries and adventure activities. Discover Trang An, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for its caves that can be explored by boat.
Tam Coc, popularly known as ‘Halong Bay on land’, stuns with its refreshingly green rice fields and soaring limestone karsts. While there, make a trip to Bich Dong Pagoda. This impressive temple presents breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
